Mike Simms - POI Commissioner

Michael Simms currently works for the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 150, supporting railroad track construction and derailment response work across its multi-state jurisdiction. He previously worked at U.S. Steel Gary Works as an operating engineer.

From 1983 to 2004, Michael served in the U.S. Army, including assignments with the 101st Airborne Division, 1st Armored Division, and 7th Infantry Division. His awards include the Combat Infantry Badge, Air Assault Badge, Army Expeditionary Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, three Army Achievement Medals, the Overseas Service Medal, three Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbons, and 38th Infantry Division, 3rd Brigade Noncommissioned Officer of the Year (1991 and 1992).

In addition to his technical and field experience, Michael brings a long-standing commitment to service, safety, and teamwork. His background spans labor and industry environments where reliable execution, coordination, and clear communication are essential.

He is experienced working in team-based field operations that require planning, attention to detail, and adherence to procedures. Colleagues value his steady approach to problem-solving and his focus on completing work safely and efficiently.

Michael combines professionalism with a practical, people-first approach, building strong working relationships across crews, stakeholders, and community partners. As Commissioner, he aims to apply that experience in service to the public and to support solutions that are dependable, safe, and well-executed.
