Meet Indiana Secretary of Transportation and Infrastructure Matt Ubelhor

Matt Ubelhor brings decades of operational leadership and infrastructure experience to Indiana’s transportation and logistics landscape. Appointed by Governor Braun in January 2025 as Indiana’s Secretary of Transportation and Infrastructure, Ubelhor oversees a portfolio that includes road, ports, and multimodal transportation systems, broadband development, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, and regional development initiatives.

Before joining the Governor’s cabinet, Ubelhor built a career in large scale industrial operations, most recently serving as Senior Vice President of Operations at White Stallion Energy, where he managed complex production environments, workforce safety, and cost control across multiple sites. Earlier roles at Peabody Energy further strengthened his experience in logistics intensive industries that rely on efficient transportation networks and reliable infrastructure.

Secretary Ubelhor’s public service includes serving three terms in the Indiana House of Representatives from 2010 to 2015, where he was a member of the Ways and Means, Natural Resources, and Public Policy Committees. That experience gave him firsthand insight into the legislative process and the importance of aligning infrastructure investment with economic development goals.

As Secretary of Transportation and Infrastructure, Ubelhor has emphasized stewardship, operational efficiency, and long term planning—principles that directly support Indiana’s ports as engines of commerce. Indiana’s maritime assets play a critical role in multimodal freight movement, connecting river, rail, and road networks to global markets. Ubelhor has highlighted the importance of coordination among state agencies, regional partners, and industry stakeholders to keep Indiana competitive and supply chains resilient.

A lifelong Hoosier, Ubelhor began his career as an equipment operator before advancing into senior leadership roles, a path that continues to shape his practical, operations focused approach. For Ports of Indiana and its partners, his background offers a clear understanding of how infrastructure decisions translate into real world economic impact on jobs, communities, and the state’s ability to move goods efficiently.
