JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. – Leaders from AT&T* and the Ports of Indiana joined local elected officials and business leaders today at the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville to announce that the Jeffersonville and Mount Vernon ports have both been certified as “AT&T Fiber Ready.”

The initiative was part of AT&T’s continuing efforts to drive economic development and investment in Indiana and the Ports of Indiana’s commitment to developing state-of-the-art port infrastructure to help grow business and attract new companies to the state’s ports. Indiana has three maritime ports on the Ohio River and Lake Michigan that now offer fiber connections to 2,800 acres of multimodal industrial sites.

“For years, we’ve invested in Indiana to deliver high-speed internet in urban and rural areas across the state using the latest wired and wireless technologies,” said AT&T Indiana President Bill Soards. “This announcement offers an opportunity to highlight AT&T’s fiber infrastructure in two of the state’s ports – infrastructure that is helping local companies drive job creation. The fiber optic connectivity that is available in both of these tremendous state assets is in place to meet the communications needs of businesses of all sizes.”

Indiana’s ports are home to over 70 companies which conduct advanced manufacturing, processing and logistics-related services, and these operations require high-speed internet connections to operate specialized equipment and connect to corporate networks around the world.

“While connections to rail lines and highways are vital to a port, in today’s world of innovation and technology, digital connectivity is just as important,” said Ports of Indiana CEO Rich Cooper. “Our customers are making us increasingly aware of the need for fiber not only for high-speed internet connections, but to allow microprocessors and machines to connect and communicate in their manufacturing processes.”

Located over 600 miles from an ocean, Indiana’s ports are uniquely positioned to handle international shipments and provide well-connected industrial sites at the median center of the U.S. population.

“Indiana’s ports along the Ohio River are already some of the area’s most significant economic engines and this new Fiber Ready designation will make them even more attractive to companies,” said One Southern Indiana President and CEO Wendy Dant Chesser. “AT&T is helping us make the most of opportunities to bring jobs and investment to southern Indiana.”
