Indiana's three ports in Burns Harbor, Mount Vernon and Jeffersonville are all connected
by the Inland Waterway System via the Ohio, Mississippi and Illinois rivers. This also gives
Indiana's ports year-round access to international ships in New Orleans.
The Inland Waterway System stretches for 12,000 miles providing direct waterway connections
to 38 states and the opportunity for transfers to ocean-going vessels at the Gulf of Mexico.
The Inland Waterway System handles more than 630 million tons of cargo per year.
Harbor Service
Barge switching and fleeting at the port is performed by Mount Vernon Barge Service. Currently
there is barge fleeting capacity at the port for more than 400 barges.
