Indiana's three ports in Burns Harbor, Mount Vernon and Jeffersonville are all connected
by the Inland Waterway System via the Ohio, Mississippi and Illinois rivers. This also gives
Indiana's ports year-round access to international ships in New Orleans.
The Inland Water System stretches for 12,000 miles across the U.S. providing direct waterway
connections to 38 states and the opportunity for transfers to ocean-going vessels at the Gulf of
Mexico. The Inland Waterway System handles more than 630 million tons of cargo per year.
Harbor Service
Barge switching and fleeting at the port is performed by Louisiana Dock Co. (LDC), an American
Commercial Lines (ACL) company. LDC has committed to providing the equipment and resources needed
to service the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville. Currently barge fleeting capacity within the entire
harbor is 185 barges per day.
