Indiana's three ports in Burns Harbor, Mount Vernon and Jeffersonville are all connected by the Inland Waterway System via the Ohio, Mississippi and Illinois rivers. This also gives Indiana's ports year-round access to international ships in New Orleans.

The Inland Waterway System stretches for 12,000 miles across the U.S. providing direct waterway connections to 38 states and the opportunity for transfers to ocean-going vessels at the Gulf of Mexico. The Inland Waterway System handles more than 630 million tons of cargo per year.
