Gov. announces transportation infrastructure panel at Logistics Summit

[Oct. 11, 2013]

INDIANAPOLIS – The sold out Indiana Logistics Summit served as a perfect backdrop on Thursday for an announcement by Governor Mike Pence for the establishment of a Blue Ribbon Panel to guide transportation infrastructure in Indiana.

Recognizing the 11th annual Summit as the “best event ever,” the governor acknowledged the value of logistics in Indiana making note that the state is ranked among the top 10 in 46 logistics-related categories. Indiana sits at the top of logistics rankings in four categories including pass-through highways, rail-tons of primary metals originated and terminated, and shortest distance to median center of the U.S. population.

“People in logistics know we’re in the middle of everywhere – the heart of the heartland,” said Pence during his announcement. “If you’re going to be the ‘Crossroads of America,’ you have to have the infrastructure to back it up.”

The new panel will review projects related to water, air, road and rail transportation – all of which were at the forefront during the two-day event held in Indianapolis this week.

Each year, the Indiana Logistics Summit brings together top industry leaders from all over North America to discuss what logistics could mean for Indiana’s future. This year’s sold out event was attended by over 400 people and featured the opening of a new intermodal terminal with ‘nonstop’ service to Asia.

Immediately following the Summit, Governor Pence joined officials from Indiana Rail Road Co. and CN Railway to open the new intermodal terminal in Downtown Indianapolis by driving a 200-ton locomotive through a ribbon.

“Indiana handles over $500 billion in freight shipments per year, providing hundreds of thousands of Hoosiers with careers in logistics,” said Rich Cooper, CEO for the Ports of Indiana. “Governor Pence recognizes logistics as one of Indiana’s core industries for future job creation efforts. The Indiana Logistics Summit served as the perfect stage for him to share his vision for logistics by announcing the Blue Ribbon Panel.”
